ADHD Diagnosis in Students and Adults

For: Student College/University, Ages 18 – 25

Students with possible ADHD will have either been diagnosed with ADHD at a younger age or they may have ADHD which has gone undiagnosed. Doctors use ADHD assessment tools for adults such as standardized behavior rating scales; gathering information from the patient and those close to him; tests of cognitive abilities and a look at the patient’s medical history.

The diagnosing doctor will determine whether the adult displays 5 or more of the ADHD symptoms described in the DSM-5 guidelines.

Current ADHD diagnostic guidelines require the symptoms of ADHD to have been present before the age of 12. Adults with ADHD must have experienced ADHD symptoms for at least 6 months in more than one setting.

Clinical diagnosis of ADHD in adults is made when ADHD symptoms are interfering with the patient’s academic, social, or work functioning.

How to get a diagnosis of ADHD in adults?

When adults suspect they have ADHD they should visit a psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, clinical social worker, or their family doctor. The medical professional will give the patient physical and neurological exams; conduct in-depth interviews with the patient and perhaps other people in the patient’s life; look into family medical history and use standardized guidelines for ADHD diagnosis. If the adult meets the criteria for ADHD they will be diagnosed.

ADHD Diagnosis in Adults FAQ

What are the diagnostic criteria for ADHD in adults?

For an adult diagnosis of ADHD, the symptoms must have been present prior to age 12. A diagnosis of ADHD will only be made if ADHD symptoms have been present for at least 6 months in more than one setting (work, social, home etc.). Guidelines for the diagnosis of ADHD in adults over 17 years old require that 5 or more of the symptoms listed in the DSM-5 manual are present. ADHD diagnosis is made when the ADHD symptoms interfere negatively with the social, academic, or work functioning of the adult patient. ADHD is diagnosed when ADHD symptoms are reducing the adult’s quality of life.

Can you get ADHD for the first time as an adult?

ADHD cannot develop for the first time in adulthood – either the condition has gone undiagnosed until later in life or the person was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. Sometimes a person with undiagnosed ADHD will only feel the negative impact of ADHD symptoms once they are faced with the challenges of adult life like a work environment; sexual relationships; adult social situations and new academic challenges. For ADHD diagnosis in adults, the symptoms of ADHD must have been present before age 12.
