The non-stimulant medication Atomoxetine is sold under the brand name Strattera. Strattera is FDA-approved for use in ADHD adults and children over 6 years old. Stimulant medication is considered the best option for ADHD treatment and non-stimulant ADHD medication like Strattera is the second line of treatment.

The Pros and Cons of Using Strattera or Adderall to Treat ADHD

Adderall is a stimulant ADHD medication while Strattera is a non-stimulant ADHD medication. Strattera does not have the potential for abuse. Adderall is a schedule I controlled substance and has the potential to be abused. Extensive, prolonged use of Adderall could lead to dependence. Adderall is an immediate-release stimulant and you can see the effects within an hour. Strattera can take 4-6 weeks before the full effects are felt. The therapeutic effect of Strattera lasts for 24 hours.

The therapeutic effect of Adderall lasts 4-6 hours, and there is an extended-use version which can last up to 12 hours. You can take a “break” from Adderall and then continue using it whereas with Strattera you have to take it consistently to get the therapeutic effect. Strattera has a black box warning for the potential for increased suicidal thoughts. Adderall has black box warnings for cardiac events and the potential for abuse.
