ADHD Information for Grandparents

For: Elderly, Seniors, Golden Age, Grandmothers/fathers Ages 75 – 120

It is important for the grandparents of ADHD children to understand the disorder.

The older generation often doesn’t “believe” in ADHD and they remember the days when kids were punished for bad behavior and disorders were unheard of. Parents can explain to grandparents about ADHD symptoms and the strategies used to help ADHD kids. If the grandparent spends a significant amount of time with the ADHD grandchild then they need to understand the importance of routine in an ADHD child’s life.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren with ADHD

When grandparents are raising their grandchildren they take on the role of parent and need to deal with their grandchildren’s ADHD as a parent would. This means making sure the child gets the appropriate medication and therapy. It also means that the grandparents must be in contact with the child’s teachers and be an advocate for the child in school.

Grandparents raising ADHD grandchildren should educate themselves about the disorder, perhaps join a support group and implement strategies in the home to help their ADHD grandchild.

Grandparenting Kids with ADHD

Grandparents can provide support for their adult children raising ADHD children. Often kids see grandparents as a haven of unconditionally love. Grandparents should learn about ADHD and adopt strategies to help grandchildren manage ADHD symptoms. Grandparents should create a safe “childproof” environment without too many distractions or unnecessary stimulation.

Grandparents can provide consistent boundaries as well as gentle guidance with lots of patience.

It is important for grandparents to follow the treatment plan decided by parents and not interfere unless asked to. Grandparents can provide a much-needed break for parents who are constantly dealing with the demands of an ADHD child.

Grandparents Don’t Believe in ADHD

Grandparents can sometimes think that their ADHD grandchildren are being willfully disobedient, acting out or that they lack discipline. Without knowledge of ADHD, grandparents might even say inappropriate things about the child’s behavior. Grandparents may claim that in their day there was no such thing as ADHD; they may suggest some miracle cure or they may blame their adult children for bad parenting. The only real solution is to provide grandparents with educational material so that they can learn about ADHD. It may be a good idea to even demonstrate how strategies can be used to manage ADHD symptoms or to show the grandparent how the child behaves with and without medication. If the grandparents cannot be convinced that ADHD is a disorder then the best you can do is ask them to give their grandkids lots of love and positive feedback and to leave the disciplining and teaching up to the parents.

FAQ

How to deal with an ADHD grandchild?

The best thing you can do is educate yourself about your grandchild’s disorder. Understand the symptoms of ADHD so that you can recognize them in your grandchild. Realize that your grandchild is not “acting out” or behaving badly but rather that he is suffering from symptoms that are hard to control.

How to handle a grandchild with ADHD?

Grandparents should remain a supportive presence in the lives of their ADHD grandchildren. Ask the child’s parents about strategies you can implement when spending time with your grandchildren. Reinforce the treatment plan and routine established by the child’s parents. Create a safe environment with little clutter, and without unnecessary stimulation; avoid negative language and invalidation; set firm boundaries and rules; instead of reprimanding, rather give gentle guidance and keep to a routine.
