ADHD in Women

Read in this guide about Online ADHD questionnaire for parents

Females with ADHD often go undiagnosed for many years as their symptoms are less obvious than those seen in males. Girls are more likely to have the inattentive type of ADHD rather than the hyperactive/impulsive type more common in boys.

With new awareness of the many ways in which ADHD symptoms can show themselves, more and more females are now getting tested for ADHD.

Living with a Woman with ADHD

Non-ADHD partners living with a wife with ADHD may feel isolated, overwhelmed, angry, rejected, or stressed. In effect, the spouse is living with ADHD symptoms vicariously. The solution is to learn about ADHD; have open communication between the spouses; establish strategies to cope with the ADHD symptoms and follow the recommendations of a doctor. Couples therapy with a therapist that has experience with ADHD can also make life easier. Correct medication will take the strain out of living with a woman with ADHD.

What it’s like to have ADHD as a grown woman?

If you take a look at the symptoms listed above you can imagine what it is like to be a grown woman with ADHD. A woman living with untreated ADHD can feel useless, not-good-enough, disorganized, and overwhelmed by trying to keep up with the challenges of life. ADHD women can feel like they are always trying to catch up. For many years ADHD was seen as a predominantly male disorder. Many women went undiagnosed for years, and the unique ADHD symptoms that present in women are still often overlooked. This can leave an undiagnosed ADHD woman feeling misunderstood.
