Various licensed professionals can administer therapy to ADHD patients including professionally certified coaches specializing in ADHD; a master certified ADHD coach and an ADHD certified life coach. There are a number of organizations that can certify an ADHD coach but only the medical board can certify a doctor to prescribe ADHD medication.

ADHD Training for Therapists

An ADHD therapist must have completed a Professional ADHD Coach Training Program by a recognized organization (depending on what country you are in) such as the ADD Coach Academy. A professional ADHD trained therapist should be accredited by the International Coach Federation or a similar reliable organization.

Unfortunately these days anyone can do a short course and call themselves a life coach so it is important to choose a professional who has the academic training and credentials to give quality ADHD treatment. Ideally, your ADHD practitioner should have a medical background or psychology qualification in addition to certification as an ADHD therapist.

Free ADHD Certification Online

There are free online courses about ADHD however they are intended to educate and do not qualify you to administer ADHD treatment or counseling. Free ADHD certification online is not intended to replace working with a trained professional ADHD therapist, coach, or doctor.

ADHD Certification Requirements

Legitimate ADHD training programs are offered to professionals already working in the field of medical or mental health care. ADHD certification is offered as a specialty qualification which adds to the already existing skills of the practitioner. The International Coaching Federation offers three levels of credentials each according to the number of training hours and coaching experience the coach has. Recognized institutions that provide ADHD certification include the ADD Coach Academy; JST Coaching & Training and the International ADHD Coach Training Center. Whether you choose a pediatrician, neurologist, psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or coach they must have been specifically trained to deal with ADHD.
